  • Groundbreaking research from the Reading Shoulder Unit by Prof. Ofer Levy and his team regarding Propionibacterium Acnes and shoulder arthritis. 
    Propionibacterium acnes: an underestimated etiology in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis?

    This is a very important article in that it suggests the presence of propionibacterium in previously unoperated shoulders with arthritis and furthermore that 'aseptic' failures of shoulder arthroplasty may, in fact, be related to indolent infections with this slow growing organism.

Professor Ofer Levy, MD MCh (Orth) FRCS

Ofer Levy ha studiato medicina alla Hebrew University e Hadassah School of Medicine, Gerusalemme, dal 1976 al 1982. Dopo aver completato il servizio militare ha continuato il suo training chirurgico generale al Kaplan Medical Centre a Rehovot, Israele. Si è poi trasferito allo Sheba Medical Centre, Tel Hashomer, per il suo programma di training chirurgico avanzato.

Nel 1992 è stato nominato istruttore di Chirurgia Ortopedica alla Sackler School of Medicine, Università di Tel Aviv, in cui il suo lavoro includeva un programma di ricerca significativo in scienze cliniche e di base.

Nel 1995 è diventato Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon e Capo del Servizio di Chirurgia della Spalla al Soroka Medical Centre a Beer Sheva, Israele, e allo stesso tempo è stato nominato Professore di Chirurgia Ortopedica alla Facoltà della Scienza della Salute alla Ben-Gurion University di Negev, Beer Sheva.

Dal 1997 ha lavorato con Stephen Copeland. Nel 1999, è diventato Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon al Royal Berkshire Hospital e nello stesso anno lui e Stephen Copeland hanno creato l’Unità di Chirurgia della Spalla al The Berkshire Independent Hospital. È un membro fondatore della Israeli Shoulder and Elbow Society, membro della European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery e della British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) e membro corrispondente della American Shoulder and Elbow Society.

È Fellow del Royal College of England (ad hominem).

Professore Associato presso l'Orthopaedic Research Centre for Sports Medicine and Human Performance, School of Sport and Education alla Brunel University, Londra.
Ha pubblicato molti lavori scientifici, scritto capitoli su libri di Chirurgia della Spalla ed è stato invitato a tenere lezioni in tutto il mondo.
